New perceptions in integrated power system operation and control

In the persistence of generation capacity shortages, increasing demand, private sector participation and interconnections of power systems, the operational and control tasks have become complex and multi dimensional. This paper is aimed to put forth the changing power scenario, nature and challenges being faced in successful operation, emergency control practices and new technology emerging to handle these tasks in a more efficient way through sophistication in computer/communication based measures. New perceptions in integrated power system operation and control are emphasized such as enhancement in emergency control practices, predication of voltage collapse, advancement in energy management center, role of operator, on line tools needed, application of knowledge based expert system technology and use of flexible AC transmission system etc. Important aspects of these new perceptions are focused to underline needs and to cope up with requirements of power system operation in future
