Abstract :
An optimum receiver structure for the detection of the symbol rate of a digitally modulated carrier is investigated for rectangular and Nyquist pulse shapes. The resulting receiver structure forms a maximum-likelihood symbol rate estimator. The performance of this optimum receiver is compared with that of a delay-and-multiply receiver, which is known to be sub-optimum. The signal-to-noise ratio associated with the rate-line spectrum at the receiver output is used as a measure of rate-line detectability.<>
