Abstract
Due to the rapid progress in optical frequency standards with uncertainties approaching and even surpassing the best present caesium primary standards it is foreseeable, that the second might be redefined in the future. I will present a history of optical frequency standards and discuss the prospects and possible applications of improved clocks.
