Abstract :
Sci-Eng Solutions will report on the development of compact, robust, and efficient megavolt class photon initiated (light activated) - Marxed (line-type) modulators (PIMM´s) designed to directly drive klystrons that are intended to satisfy the demanding requirements for the ´next generation linear collider´ at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. These modulators are equally applicable for the high power microwave applications pertinent to the directed energy arena. Photon-initiated switches provide the versatility of designing Marxed modulators that can efficiently drive a variety of sources while eliminating the requirement for inefficient ´onboard´ electrical trigger circuits intrinsic to other semiconductor switches. The PIMM´s topology promises to provide perhaps the most compact and cost effective modulator design possible, while exhibiting superb versatility and reliability
