Abstract :
Following the publication in early 1992 of a consultative document, Work with display screen equipment-Proposals for Regulations and guidance, a working party was set up in BT bringing together everyone with an interest in the proposed legislation. This included people from the Occupational Health Service, Safety Unit, Building Services Division, Employee Relations Department, BT Training Unit and the Human Factors Unit. The output from this working party was a programme of information and training linked to existing processes in the company for the management of health and safety. The paper outlines the sequence of events which led to this programme being launched and looks at the impact that this has had. In particular, the estimated cost of remedial action and the take up of eye testing. The paper considers proposals for further investigations into the issue of rest breaks and for the ongoing monitoring of workstations beyond the 31st December 1996 deadline for compliance
