Abstract :
In this paper, the lateral vibration of the cable-stay bridge induced by pedestrians is investigated. The motion differential equations of 2 DOFs nonlinear model for the lateral vibration of the cable-stay bridge induced by pedestrians are derived by using the loading function suggested by Nakamura [8]. The conditions for the lateral vibration of the cable-stay bridge are obtained from the standpoint of nonlinear dynamics. We show that whether the lateral vibration of the cable-stay bridge occurs depends on the rate of a pedestrian´s lateral force, pedestrian density, rate of synchronized pedestrians, the pedestrians´ attitude to large vibration amplitude and the damping of bridge, but is unrelated to the stiffness of the bridge and stays as well as the damping of the stays. In addition, it seems that the pedestrians are not always most likely to synchronize at the bridge frequency around 1.0Hz.
