Abstract :
This paper is concerned with ADSL systems operating in BT´s local access network-exploiting the existing metallic wires which connect peoples´ houses to telephone exchanges. We consider the performance consequences of various architectural options. Generally the options are to give more service, but require the transmission system to carry more payload-so the transmission system loses reach: enhanced service but to less of the population. We discuss the parameters of the simulations performed, and present numerical results from those simulations. We conclude that over 90% of telephone lines can support a 2 Mbit/s video on demand (VoD) offering, and the bandwidth used could be increased considerably over most of those
