Abstract :
An outline is presented of the concepts and step-by-step approach used for the design of a single-board computer, the SBC-186, based on the Intel 80186 microprocessor. It was designed as a stand-alone system consisting of the processor and a terminal, and incorporates a variety of memory and input/output (I/O) options. A modular approach is used in presenting the SBC-186, breaking the overall system into smaller designs. The authors emphasize the need for timing, DC and AC analysis of designs to ensure their proper operation and reliability. Also presented is the system software development, and how it was separated into three main parts: initialization, memory tests, and the development of a minor routine.<>
