Abstract :
The intuition developed through experimentation provides a definite advantage for students learning image processing, a specialized branch of signal processing. The Vision and Image Processing (VIP) package was designed in 1985 as a software environment to support image processing research and education. Since 1988 VIP has been used for the lab portion of an undergraduate course on image processing in conjunction with Waterloo´s Project BEACON. The authors explain the design of VIP, and discuss their experience with using the software for teaching
