Abstract
To remain cost competitive and foster employee pride and ownership, the US postal service promotes operator servicing of automated mail processing equipment. The Carrier Sequence Bar Code Sorter (CSBCS) was designed from the ground up to be operator maintainable. The CSBCS provides machine status information to a knowledge based system (KBS) resident in a document on computer (DOC). The KBS identifies maintenance problems and guides the operator through diagnostic procedures. The KBS contains hyperlinks to an online reference (OLR) which steps the operator through servicing activities. DOC is easy to learn and use and enables operators to repair most CSBCS breakdowns
