  • Abstract
Generally insulating composites consist of two components like solid-liquid or solid-gas composites. However with recent advancements in fields like GIS, UHV and dc transmission, the insulating composites are invariably made of three components due to interconnection of systems consisting of two different insulation systems like the GIS and paper-oil insulation of a convertor transformer. Thus in the present day context, it is essential to study the compatibility of insulation systems consisting of more than 3 components. This paper presents the results of breakdown studies carried out on three insulating components namely air/solid/liquid system. Different solids and liquids have been used and the field conditions have been varied to study the influence of different parameters. The study has shown that the surrounding media has significant influence on the breakdown characteristics of the total insulation system
