Abstract :
L-3 Communications, Communication Systems-West is developing a single pitch, 6U VME satellite communications (satcom) modem (3158A) that is a full functional replacement for the OM-73 modem. The capabilities of this modem greatly exceed those of the OM-73, allowing it to operate with a number of military and commercial satcom services, supporting data rates ranging from 750 b/s to 75 Mb/s. The L-3 Communications Model 3158A supports the Intelsat Business Services (IBS) and Intermediate Data Rate (IDR) commercial services, including the optional concatenated Reed-Solomon forward error correction and internal overhead multiplexing. The 3158A is fully compliant with MTL-STD-188-165 and can be used for a number of common data link (CDL) satcom applications. The 3158A will also introduce some new bandwidth efficient operation modes using 8 PSK and 16 PSK trellis coded modulation
