Abstract :
Injecting ions into a layer of insulating nonpolar liquid lying above a conducting liquid generally lowers the applied voltage at which the interface destabilises. The system of equations and boundary conditions obtained by the linear analysis of hydrodynamic instability is first recalled. Then a simple model illustrates the destabilising effect of the space charge and some analytical results are given along with the numerically determined values of the criterion for interfacial instability. Finally the influence of the injection induced convection in the insulating layer on the interface instability is discussed
