Abstract :
Noise contributions at the base station of a personal communication service (PCS) are analyzed. Cascade calculations are made and the influence of each device is studied. In particular, tower-top low-noise amplifiers are introduced to improve system noise figure; discussion on the influence of their noise characteristics and optimal gains is presented. Our findings are compared with experimental results from bench testing and field-testing. Subsequently, a short study on antenna noise is conducted at 2 GHz. Various noise sources are identified and approximately quantified. Finally, recommendations follow concerning optimal use of tower-top low-noise amplifiers
