Abstract
The authors present an XLPE cable model. They show that experiments confirm the essential features of the Lippmann equation now developed to include bulk effects. Moreover the value of the compliance deduced from the equations is of the right order of magnitude and of the correct temperature dependence. The non-linearities emphasise the importance of extending the measurements to much higher field strengths. The existence of all-pervading mechanical body stresses which, under alternating voltages, produce cyclic strains particularly in regions of high electrical fields has been demonstrated
