Abstract :
The examination of the size distributions of water trees in 20 kV XLPE cables removed from service after more than a decade revealed astonishing differences, partly explainable by the existence of single winged and bow tie water trees. Step-test results of field-aged cables indicate the existence of two types of XLPE with different susceptibility to water treeing. A corresponding differentiation seems to exist in the melting temperatures
