Abstract :
Third generation cellular (3G) systems are now being designed and developed for deployment. These new systems are targeted to increase channel density and data handling capabilities. Third generation networks blend cell transport with the traditional cellular system needs, resulting in significant changes in transmission of information to base stations. Efficient system implementations will require highly integrated functions. Silicon integrated solutions, with complementary software/firmware, need to respond to this new functionality while adding the flexibility necessary in a dynamic environment. This paper reviews the needs of current TDMA and CDMA base stations from a transport perspective, the needs required by the emerging 3G systems, and the capabilities of Lucent´s Microelectronics Group to meet these needs now and in the future
