Abstract :
24/7 Telecom and other ldquoMission Criticalrdquo facilities that are dependant on the electric grid are facing increasing operational and managerial challenges. Spiraling diesel fuel and lead costs (combined with new environmental regulations) are posing additional challenges to operational reliance on traditional lead acid battery UPS and diesel gen-set back-up generation. As systems become more and more digital, power quality and the reliability of electricity supply becomes more critical. This paper will highlight the current issues associated with electricity supply from the grid, how they affect the Telecoms industry, what electricity suppliers are doing (or not doing) about the core issues and will provide insight as to how telecoms operators can control their destiny, if they address the core electricity grid issue today- "The Peak".
