Abstract :
Mobile networks are more often the prime source of telecommunication especially in emerging markets and developing countries where fixed line networks are rudimentary. The availability of the communication network is key, even when the power grid fails. Thus, Mobile Network Operators (MNO) are highly dependent on reliable electrical power to run their base transceiver stations (BTS), even in developed countries when emergency services need to continue with their communication in extreme cases. Hence, there is a dire need for compact power solutions that exceed the present requirements of the BTS infrastructure. Fuel cells offer a tremendous improvement to conventional backup. They are compact and lightweight, backup times can be extended easily. Fuel cells have been the choice of power in the aerospace industry for decades. In recent years mobile phone operators have started to test and later roll out fuel cells for selected sites. Increased concern about prime energy usage, costs and subsequent CO2 release as well as legal requirements will see a further increase in the roll out of fuel cells as a cost effective, sustainable and highly reliable energy source.
