  • Abstract
The main engineering aspects concerning the operation of the tokamak ISTTOK in a multicycle alternating flat-top plasma current regime are presented. AC discharges have been obtained feeding the ohmic and vertical field circuits with a power supply based on two capacitor banks and a fast Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) H-bridge, feedback controlled by a discrete power DAC implemented with a set of IGBTs and resistors. The horizontal field Is created by a current provided by an independent DC power supply. The optimization of AC operation has also implied the installation of a new sat of windings for the vertical field and adequate gas puffing. Discharges with seven half-cycles flat-top plasma currents, in a total time span of about five times the maximum duration of a single DC discharge, were already achieved
