Abstract
The energy constraint in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) advocates the design and use of low power components in sensor nodes. Commercial general purpose microcontrollers are not suitable for such applications and have motivated us towards the design of a low-power microcontroller tailored for the WSN application domain. In this paper, we study the characteristics of typical WSN applications and present the design of a power-aware microcontroller using conventional design techniques. Our simulation results show significant power savings compared to other off-the-shelf microcontrollers.
