Abstract :
To fully utilize the CD-ROM (compact disc-read only memory) as an electronic publishing multimedia on the NEWS workstation, an audio bit-rate reduction system and a function to access the standard logical format of volume and file on a CD-ROM have been developed and implemented. The system provides a choice of three sound levels in order to meet the different audio requirements. Support of the standard logical format of files on CD-ROM by the operating system enables users to identify a file on a standard CD-ROM as a Unix file.<>
