Abstract :
Oxidation of ethylene-propylene elastomers (EPR and EPDM) in the presence of two brominated compounds, decabromdiphenyl oxide (DBDPO) and tetrabrombisphenol A (TBBPA) may be investigated by oxygen uptake method. Three additive concentrations (5, 10 and 15%) were used to evaluate the reliability of this method. Induction time and propagation rates of oxidation can be determined in air at different testing temperatures. Polymeric systems emphasize that EPDM is less stable than EPR and DBDPO is more efficient than TBBPA for all concentrations. One benefit of oxygen uptake procedure consists of an easier way to evaluate behaviour of any checked system to sudden action of spread thermal energy. Either oxygen index, or half wave values can be used to evaluate thermal strength of tested material. Significant effects of brominated compounds studied in this paper can demonstrate the ability of this procedure to test any chemical system
