Abstract
Some basic features of the green building assessment systems in the USA, UK and Japan were compared firstly in this paper, from which it was found to be necessary to develop an appropriate green building assessment system with consideration of the specific situations in China. In order to describe the variation of assessment grade during the life-cycle of green buildings entirely, a new green building assessment system with three indices (including the quality, load and durability indices) was established based on the existing two indices system (Green Olympic Building Assessment System with only the quality and load indices). The durability of structures is considered in the new assessment system and therefore the building assessment and structural assessment can be unified for the green buildings.
