Abstract :
We describe classification schemes for distinguishing eigenmodes in fibers, and highlight their similarities and differences. We then describe characterization schemes useful for elucidating their properties, such as field and polarization distributions, dispersion, and nonlinear impairments - characteristics of interest for fibers being developed for MDM.
