Abstract
The performance of directive and omnidirectional handset antennas in free space and beside a phantom head is evaluated with radiation pattern measurements in the antenna chamber and radio channel measurements in different propagation environments. The results suggest that the effect of the head on the directive antennas was smaller than on the omnidirectional antennas. The directive antennas also performed better than the omnidirectional antennas.
