Abstract
Outlines the development of six VLSI ASICs needed to build a universal videocodec. This codec is CCIR601 compatible and meets the requirements of the ATM B-ISDN environments. The codec is particularly able to manage the variable bit rate (VBR) and to cope with both interactive and distributive videoservices in the range of 1 to 50 Mbit/s in the frame of the Belgian Broadband Experiment
