Landscape urbanism is an emergent school in design disciplines currently underway in west Europe and North America. It emphasizes landscape replace architecture as the basic building block and medium of contemporary urbanism. The aim of this paper is to examine the emergence and development of landscape urbanism. Through literature review, the main themes of landscape urbanism are analyzed, including the new perspective of landscape, landscape process over time, the landscape of infrastructure, drosscape and disciplinary realignment. The influential projects at different phases, which play a significant role in the development of landscape urbanism theory, are also introduced. Finally, based on a synthesis of the literature, the contributions and limitations of current development of landscape urbanism are presented. It points out that the landscape urbanism provides an opportunity to integrate architecture and landscape architecture, and bridges the gap between several relevant disciplines. Today, urbanization in China is taking place at an unprecedented pace, which would create great potential opportunities to practice the landscape urbanism concept for a sustainable urban future.
