Abstract
The switched multi-megabit data service (SMDS) is a high-performance, public, packet-switched data service. Offered as public network equivalent of a MAC-level service, the datagram transport offered by SMDS is easily integrated into networking protocol architectures using local area network (LAN) or metropolitan area network (MAN) technologies such as Ethernet and fiber distributed data interface (FDDI). A customer network management (CNM) service has been defined in conjunction with SMDS, based on SNMP. SMDS and the accompanying CNM service were successfully demonstrated. These demonstrations and how SMDS and its CNM service can be integrated into existing corporate networks are discussed
