Abstract :
In this paper, we propose an enhanced power ramping scheme via multi-threshold detection for a UMTS random access channel. Our proposed scheme allows the mobile station to use different power increments for different scenarios. Via simulations, we compare two random access channel transmission schemes, namely, the power ramping scheme with and without the multi-threshold detection algorithm. Our simulation results indicate that the access channel throughput increases when the multi-threshold detection algorithm is used together with the power ramping method. The interference caused by the random access channel is largely reduced. In addition, the multi-threshold algorithm allows the base station to send a faster acknowledgement back to the mobile. The access delay is greatly reduced. In conclusion, our proposed enhanced power ramping scheme via multi-threshold detection algorithm greatly improves the performance of the UMTS random access channel
