Abstract :
The use of polymeric plasticizers for poly(vinyl chloride) based ion-selective electrode membranes was examined. Photopolymerized dihexenyl adipate, commercial Paraplex G-25, G-40, G-62, and Plasthall P-650 gave functional electrodes and increase sensor lifetime to varying degrees, on the basis of accelerated aging at 115 degrees C. Optical studies of the uptake of water in membranes showed that osmotic pressure governs the amount of uptake. The nonuniform water distribution profile observed after 14 days indicates the presence of stress, which may account in part for the increased lifetime of sensors prepared with polymeric plasticizers, since they can increase membrane self-cohesion.<>
