Abstract :
Summary form only given. In this paper we describe our experiments designed to explore methods and limitations to wavelength switching in semiconductor lasers. We discuss how these results can be used in novel meso-optic devices. Our initial experiments are performed using spatially separated fiber Bragg gratings (BG) to create multi-external cavity semiconductor laser diodes. Each BG defines a distinct laser cavity. We demonstrate the use of the vernier effect and loss modulation to switch lasing wavelength. The vernier effect is used to sequentially switch the wavelength with a mode suppression of -40 dB. The challenge is to find methods to switch the optical wavelength, either electrically or optically, that can be scaled for use in meso-optic devices. Preliminary experiments indicate that by changing the bias current to one section of a two section laser it is possible to switch the lasing wavelength. Alternatively, injecting light into the multi-cavity laser diode at BG defined wavelength selects the cavity defined by that BG as the lasing cavity. We intend to discuss how the results can be used in novel meso-optical devices. For example, by fabricating high Q side coupled disk or ring resonators in close proximity to a laser it should be possible to select the lasing wavelength of the light output from the laser using the vernier effect
