Abstract :
TE and TM reflection coefficients differ at non-normal angles and thus TE and TM oblique scattering responses differ. Using the uniqueness of these responses, a new algorithm is presented for reconstructing a lossy, stratified dielectric from one-sided oblique TE and TM impulsive plane wave reflection responses. The lossy layered dielectric is modeled as a discrete asymmetric lattice filter and the solution employs digital signal processing techniques. Novel features of the algorithm include: (i) reconstruction of lossy layered media from one-sided reflection responses at a single oblique probing angle; (ii) using the uniqueness of TE and TM oblique reflection coefficients and therefore responses to provide sufficient information for reconstruction; and (iii) a recursive use of layer stripping ideas, in which lossy layers of the stratified dielectric are reconstructed by iterating between the inverse and forward problems, which are solved using parametric equations and running a fast numerical algorithm backwards, respectively
