Abstract :
In this paper is reported an instantiation of The Memory Map Knowledge Representation model in the domain of education, in order to study more of its properties. The Memory Map was used to model the knowledge domain, also referred to as the expert model of a college course, and the knowledge of each student enrolled in it. The students and expert models were compared and the differences were used to personalize the sequence of learning activities for each student. The model is designed to detect secondary knowledge gaps, i.e., concepts required to understand the main concepts, and also estimates the correct time and place where a learning activity should be introduced. A prototype of the model was used in an everyday scenario student to model a course and to see what impact the adaptation had on the students. Student progress was measured through academic performance and the perceived impact on each student was studied using surveys and interviews. The Memory Map expressiveness and flexibility showed to be very capable of modeling both, the knowledge of a student, and the conceptual content of a college course.
