Abstract
The interest in digital video systems has focussed primarily on the choice of compression algorithm for reducing data rates to manageable levels. Yet, compression is only one element in determining the quality of the final image. The author also examines some of the other elements that directly affect image quality. He begins with an overview of system needs and follows the processing of the video signal; including aspects such as resolution, scaling, colour conversion, compression, and transmission
