Abstract :
We investigated the extent of which disturbance from microwave ovens can affect the digital communication expected to utilize the 2.14 GHz band as the IMT2000 down link. Amplitude probability distribution (APD) of the envelope of disturbance was used to evaluate the characteristics of disturbance, and the bit error rate (BER) was used to evaluate the quality of communication system. The APD of the disturbance and the BER of the communication links were measured simultaneously in order to investigate their relationship of correlation. APD measuring equipment developed by our laboratory were used to measure short-time fluctuations in the APD of disturbance and the BER of the digital communication links. The disturbances in the digital communication system are limited within the receiver bandwidth of the system. Thus, in order to correctly measure and evaluate the effect of disturbance on the digital communication system, it was necessary to adjust the bandwidth of the disturbance measuring system to the receiver bandwidth of the digital communication system. To do this, we measured the APD of disturbance by using several bandwidths and thereby observed the relationship between the APD and the BER degradation of the digital communication link
