Abstract
The extrinsic update at each iteration in the turbo decoding algorithm (TDA) is shown to be a memoryless, nonlinear function of the change in transition probability estimate produced by a Baum-Welch update to the same system. Thus the passage of extrinsic information is formulated in terms other than the removal of `redundant´ information
