Abstract :
Permutation block codes combined with noncoherent detection can be used to make the transmission robust against permanent frequency disturbances and impulse noise. Permutation codes have the disadvantage of a low code efficiency as a function of the minimum distance. We extend the idea of permutation block coding to trellis coding. We give a generalized construction procedure for new trellis codes of various rates and constraint lengths using a distance preserving mapping technique. Maximum likelihood decoding of these codes can follow naturally
