Abstract :
This paper provides an overview of advanced metering and explains how utilities can use advanced metering in conjunction with AMR and data collection services to perform forecast and predictive maintenance, which can lead to cost savings and conservation. It examines case studies of real-world issues within electric, gas and water utilities and the advanced metering solutions that benefited them. For example, we´ll examine how utilities are using advanced meters to: 1) troubleshoot energy consumption issues for key accounts, 2) enhance the reliability of load research programs, 3) conduct end-use studies from within customer facilities or around their premises and, 4) simplify demand-side management programs. Finally, the paper gives attendees a technology-focused overview the various communications options for meter reading such as dedicated phone lines and cellular, in addition to a case study on the newly available and affordable meter reading via satellite.
