  • Abstract
The authors propose a model for [Ca2+]i elevation in spines of hippocampus, which is composed of chemical reactions of glutamate and receptor channels, and diffusion of Ca2+ ion. [Ca2+]i is dramatically increased when multiple synapses are stimulated by many impulses, while increase in [Ca2+]i is small when a single synapse is stimulated. This result indicates that stimulation of multiple synapses is required for LTP induction.
