  • Abstract
The open system interconnection (OSI) basic reference model of ISO/IEC 7498 has been a topological framework for information technology development discussion across a broad community of developers. Such a common framework has helped streamline synergistic information exchange between the telecommunications and computer industries. In the broad field of mechatronics, many relationships of synergistic potential exist, but the catalysing of synergies requires a common basis of reference for collaborative discussions. The field of mechatronics could well afford to have an analogous form of common reference model, but any such mechatronic reference model must incorporate considerations for the integration needs of real-time control, particularly in the areas of electromechanical subsystems and mechanical subsystems
