Abstract :
We document measurements of various Artimi designed UWB antennas (patent applied for) (Smith, L. et al., ibid. p.299-303). These structures may be used in monopole or dipole configurations, provided that they are driven in the appropriate manner. The dipole form has a form factor suitable for inclusion in modules, such as a PMCIA card. Monopole versions are suitable for use with UWB development systems as they are easily connected to 50 Ω coaxial systems. Both may be slotted to provide a narrow band of frequencies of non-responsiveness to remove the effect of radio interference, such as that from local IEEE 802.11 transmissions. The measurements agree broadly with the simulation results, although the Bishop´s Hat antenna behaves in a subtly different mode than was originally conceived. The low frequency performance is determined by the maximum dimension (the central length), but the high frequency responses are due to the superposition of a number of modes, including λ/2 resonance of the short edge elements and 3λ/2 resonance of the longer elements.
