Abstract :
An artificial neural network was trained to translate the Chinese characters representing numerals into their Arabic numeral equivalents. Preprocessing of the characters was minimized in an effort to test the network´s ability to produce its own internal representations from a large input set. A modified back-propagation algorithm was used that incorporates several heuristics to reduce convergence time and avoid common training problems.<>
