Abstract
We review recent advances in soliton systems and highlight their unique potential to meet global network requirements in terms of capacity, routing-functionality and cost-effectiveness. Recent experimental results are presented well as detailed numerical simulations of a 160 Gbit/s system based on a novel technique of synchronous WDM regeneration. Alternatives for in-line pulse control techniques combined with dispersion management are shown to enhance the system performance up to levels that are inaccessible to non-soliton systems.
