Abstract :
This paper argues that in order to further improve the quality of digital learning environments one must also invest in the invention and development of digital genres. Quality and complexity at the level of document genres, messages and meaning will be defining criteria for superior digital learning environments. The paper suggests that perspectives from genre theory should be applied to the understanding and development of learning objects. Based on a survey of various genres, in both traditional learning environments and digital formats, such as computer games, a prototype genre - the Intro - is presented for application in educational project work.
