Abstract
Pulse-echo scattering in an elastic solid has been investigated using finite difference methods. The aim was to investigate the forward scattering problem using realistic transducer signals and realistic defects. New finite difference algorithms have been developed, most notably for the free and internal boundaries. A better method of programming the input pulse has been discovered. Excellent agreement of calculated echo signals with real data has been obtained. The evolution of the outgoing and scattered waves can be shown pictorially, illuminating what is happening. The methods should be valuable in model testing, as well as in improving target characterization from real data
