  • Abstract
The optimization, manufacturing, and characterization of surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonator oscillators in the 500-MHz range are discussed. The all-quartz packaged resonators exhibit characteristics allowing their use for military airborne radars and systems. Frequency stability over the operating temperature range is less than 1 p.p.m. p.p. Results show that aging less than 1 p.p.m./year can be achieved. The measured SSB phase noise spectrum under random vibrations corresponding to levels encountered in airborne applications are -33 dBc/Hz at 600 Hz offset frequency from the carrier, -139 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz, and less than -165 and -175 dBc/Hz at, respectively, 10 and 100 kHz from the carrier
