Abstract
The development of design tools for optical interconnections needs an exact model of the different elements of optical interconnections. One of these elements is the waveguide itself and will be modeled in this work. The model must provide the ability to describe the signal propagation within the waveguide including mode coupling and losses. Once the guided modes are known, the coupling between the guided modes and the losses will be calculated using the coupled mode theory. Having calculated the coupling coefficients and the power loss coefficients, signal propagation which means the propagation of the guided modes, can be described applying the coupled power theory
