Abstract
An AMBU bag that is equipped with an incentive spirometer allows healthcare professionals to determine when a patient begins to breathe spontaneously. The incentive spirometer on the device clearly indicates when a patient takes a shallow breath (200 - 300 ml) or an average breath (200 - 500 ml). The next iteration of the AMBU bag with an incentive spirometer should utilize a smaller, customized incentive spirometer. This will allow for more accurate readings of tidal volumes, especially smaller volumes such as those of shallow breaths. The face mask of the device should also be redesigned to provide a better seal between the patient´s mandible and the outer surface of the mask. This will allow for a more efficient delivery of oxygen to the patient´s airway.
