Abstract :
High voltage substations produce strong electromagnetic fields (EMF) in the surrounding areas. People who live close to substations express concern about the possible health risk from the exposure to the EMFs. In this research, EMF characteristics are measured inside two 69 kV substations, and an independent and unbiased assessment of the EMF distribution in the substations is provided. The substation EMFs resulting from the field measurements are presented using 3-D plots and contour maps. The maps of EMF distributions and substation layouts are also overlapped to demonstrate their relationship. A conclusion is drawn by comparing the field measurements with the recommended limit of human exposure to the EMF.
